Electricity meter replacement questions and answers

How often should electricity meters be replaced?

This depends on the type of electricity meter installed, but the certification period is usually between 10 and 25 years. Your energy supplier should contact you when your meter is due for replacement, typically offering a modern meter as a replacement.

Is my electricity meter faulty?

If you suspect your electricity meter isn’t recording accurately, speak to your supplier. Signs of a fault may include sudden changes in your bills or inconsistent readings. In many cases, suppliers can test the meter and arrange a replacement if necessary.

Should I replace my meter even if it isn’t faulty?

Yes. Every electricity meter has a certification period, essentially a ‘best before’ date. Once this expires, your supplier is obliged to replace the meter even if it appears to be working normally.

Who pays for the replacement electricity meter?

In most cases, your supplier will cover the cost of replacing your electricity meter. You should not be charged for a standard replacement if the meter is faulty or has reached the end of its certification period.

Does a smart meter replace an electricity meter?

Yes. A smart electricity meter replaces a conventional one and can be installed when your old meter is due for replacement. Installation of a smart meter is optional, and you can choose to keep a traditional meter if preferred.
