How much does it cost to connect gas to my property?
If you’re looking to connect gas to a property in the UK, costs can vary significantly depending on factors such as the proximity to the existing gas main, trenching requirements and whether the network operator carries out aspects of the work.
How do I find out if there’s a gas connection nearby?
There are a number of ways to find out if there’s already a gas connection near your property, from quick checks you can do yourself to official searches. These include:
Check online maps – you can use your region’s Gas Distribution Network’s (GDN) map. Depending on your locality, this could be Cadent, SGN, Northern Gas Networks, or Wales & West Utilities.
Use LSBUD – LinesearchbeforeUdig.co.uk shows if gas mains are near your postcode.
Call your GDN – Give them your address, and they’ll confirm if a main is close.
Look for clues – Check for a gas meter box outside, capped-off pipes, or if the neighbouring buildings have a gas supply.
If there’s gas in the street, can I get it connected at my property?

Keep in mind, the connection itself simply gives you access to the gas supply. You’ll also need a gas meter installed, which must be fitted by a registered company in line with Ofgem regulations.
What is my MPRN number?
Your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is a unique number that identifies your gas supply point in the UK and is assigned to your property’s gas connection.
To find it, you can:
- Check your gas bill – It’s usually labelled “MPRN” or “Meter Point Reference Number” and is 6–10 digits long.
- Use the online “Find My Supplier” service – Enter your postcode at findmysupplier.energy to view your MPRN and find out your gas supplier.
- Call the Meter Number Helpline – 0870 608 1524 (calls cost extra from some phones).
