Benefits of solar PV systems
- Reduce your operating costs as your electricity bills go down; you can then reallocate this money elsewhere in the business
- Not only can installing solar PV improve your bottom line, but it’ll also strengthen your brand’s reputation as an environmentally responsible business
- The reduction in bills and lower carbon footprint will also be appealing to current or prospective tenants – you may even be able to increase the value of your assets with the installation of solar PV
- Gain energy independence and say goodbye to unpredictable utility costs and dealing with external energy suppliers
Solar PV systems FAQs
What is solar PV?
A single PV device (a cell) is roughly 6 inches in size and can only produce 1-2 watts of power. These cells are connected in chains known as modules or panels. Panels can be used individually or linked to form arrays creating a larger area to generate power from.
Due to the ability to repeatedly connect as many cells, panels, and arrays as needed, solar PV can be scaled to meet almost any power need, regardless of size.
Why should I get solar panels?
With solar panels and battery storage, you can significantly cut your electricity bills, reduce reliance on the grid, and even generate income through the Smart Export Guarantee by exporting surplus power back to the network.
How do solar panels work?
Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are built from multiple layers of semi-conducting material, most commonly silicon. When sunlight hits the panels, it generates a flow of electricity. This power is first produced as direct current (DC) and then converted into alternating current (AC) by an inverter. The resulting electricity can be used to run your home appliances, charge a battery system, or be exported back to the grid.
What is the lifespan of solar PV?
The lifespan of solar PV is typically between 25 to 30 years; however, with proper maintenance, they can last even longer.
How much maintenance does solar PV require?
Solar PV doesn’t require lots of maintenance; just ensure they are cleaned at least twice a year and inspected by a professional. At a maximum it’s recommended you get your panels cleaned 4 times a year.
Can solar PV systems generate electricity on cloudy days?
Yes, solar PV systems can generate electricity even on cloudy days – they require daylight to work, not direct sunlight.
Do I need permission to install a solar PV system?
In most cases, installing solar panels on your home is classed as permitted development, meaning you won’t usually need planning permission. However, there are exceptions, so it’s always worth checking with your local planning office first. Additional restrictions may apply if your property is:
- A listed building
- In a conservation area
- Within a national park
If you go ahead with a solar panel installation, it must also be registered with your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) – the company that supplies electricity to your property. In most cases, your installer will handle this registration on your behalf.
