New water connection FAQs

What does getting a new water connection involve?

If your property is close to an existing water main (usually located in a nearby street and already serving other customers), you can arrange a new connection through your local water company, a water retailer, an SLP (Self-Lay Provider) or a new appointee. We can help with the entire process, managing the service from start to finish.

In most cases, your chosen provider will install a communication pipe (also called a service pipe) from the boundary of your property to the nearest water main in the street. You’ll usually be responsible for installing the section of pipe that runs within your property boundary up to the point where it meets the street.

If there’s no water main nearby, or if your project involves building a new street, then a new main may need to be laid, or an existing main extended. This process is called a water mains requisition, and your provider can handle it for you.

You can also request a new water connection for a property that already has a supply, whether to renew an old connection or to separate a shared supply pipe.

What is a domestic water connection?

If you’re the owner or occupier of a property you can ask for a new water that will be used for domestic purposes. This includes:

  • Washing (washing machines, dishwashers etc)
  • Cooking
  • Sanitary facilities (toilets, bathrooms and showers etc)
What is a non-domestic connection?

If you are the owner or occupier of a commercial property, you can ask for a new water connection to be used non-domestic purposes. This includes:

  • Commercial or industrial use
  • An outside garden tap
  • A swimming pool
