Gas Connections & Gas Meters FAQ

Whether you’re embarking on a new project or moving house, there is an array of questions that come into your mind regarding your gas connection and gas meter. We’ve comprised the main ones we get asked to help clear a few things up.

How much does it cost to connect gas to a house?

The cost of getting a new gas connection can vary hugely depending on a wide array of factors. You may be expanding your business, working on property development or moving into a new house without mains gas supply. Whatever your reason, we are dedicated to getting you the best possible price and service.

Prices depend on:

  • How remote your area is – Approximately 3.6 million homes are off the national grid. If your property is in a remote area it can be challenging to connect gas to your property which can increase the cost of getting a new gas connection.
  • The number of appliances – The more energy needed, the bigger the cost of the supply.
  • Has the property previously had gas? – If it has, it is mostly a simple task to get you reconnected, so costs will be kept to a minimum.
  • The complexity of the works – If the installation work requires access to nearby properties, road closure etc. all of this will likely increase the cost of the work.
  • The distance of the gas meter from the mains – The further your property is from the mains, the more difficult it is to get connected, therefore the more costly the job.
Gas Connection and Gas Meter FAQ

Could there already be an existing gas supply to my house?

If the property has had a gas supply in the past then the infrastructure should still be in place, meaning you would just need a re-connection. If the gas supply has been capped for whatever reason, we would perform a dead or alive check to determine if the service has been disconnected. The cost of uncapping the supply can depend on whether the supply was capped after the meter or at the boundary.

How do I find out if there’s a gas connection nearby?

If your property has neighbours close by and they have a gas connection, then it’s likely there’s a supply right on your doorstep. Get in touch and we can check to see where the nearest main is. Alternatively, if they don’t have a gas connection or you are in a rural area, we can also advise on the nearest point of connection.

We have a team of specialists on hand to help with all areas of gas connections and assist you with finding out if you have a nearby supply and advise you on the next steps.

Who owns the gas pipes?

Gas pipes are owned by infrastructure providers such as your local distribution network owner (DNO), including National Grid, Northern Gas Networks and Wales and West.

How can I find out who my gas supplier is?

Every property in the UK which has a gas connection has an MPRN number which is controlled and issued by the gas transporter to your site. You can find out who your gas supplier is and details of your energy tariff on a recent gas bill. Your bill should have the suppliers name and contact details for you to be able to contact them.

Alternatively, if you do not have a recent gas bill to hand, you can also use the free Find My Supplier search tool to find your supplier after entering in few details about your property. The website enables you to find out who your gas supplier is as well as provide you with your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) and gas transporter.

What is my MPRN number? And MPAN number?

They are unique reference numbers for your gas and electricity supply that can be found on your energy bills. If you don’t have a bill, your energy supplier or DNO can tell you what it is, or you can call the National Grid on 0870 608 1524.

MPRN stands for Meter Point Reference Number and relates to your gas supply. It is used to pinpoint individual gas supply points and tends to be a 10 digit number displayed in a grid that starts with the letter S.

You will also have an MPAN number for your electricity supply that stands for the Metering Point Administration Number. It can also be known as an S number or supply number.

How do I get a gas meter fitted?

At Crown Energy, we take care of every aspect of a gas meter installation, meaning that you don’t need to worry about a thing. We will even help you find a gas provider, seeking the best available tariff at that time. Please note, you aren’t tied to that provider. If you wish to move onto a different tariff, after 30 days, you can choose another supplier of your choice.

How much will a new gas meter cost?

The cost of a new gas meter installation depends on the size of the required meter, how far you want to move it, the layout of your premises and whether you’re located on the national grid.

Upon ringing up, we will ask you to send across your site plan which we then send to our designers so they can price the job up. This is so they can understand the requirements for your gas connection and meter. By inspecting your site in detail, we can determine your needs and provide your gas meter at the best possible price.

I would like to move my gas meter, can you help?

If you need your gas meter moving, we have a specialist team on hand to assist you every step of the process. The pipe attached to the meter will determine how far we can move it.

Before we can provide you with a quote, we will need some information:

  • Address of property of work required
  • Full name and telephone number
  • How far the external pipework is that is needed to move the gas meter
  • How far the internal pipework is that is needed to reconnect the gas boiler to the new location

How much does it cost to move a gas meter?

Not every gas meter move is the same, so the cost of each job varies based on your requirements. After having an initial conversation we can determine the distance from the existing location you wish to move the meter, or if the meter is being moved inside/outside and if the gas supply pipe needs to be altered in any way.

Once we have the above information we can provide you with an accurate cost breakdown as part of a no-obligation quote.

What Our Customers Say

Had to get a quote to get a gas line connection to the house. Lewis was the point of contact and we could not get anyone more professional, kind and swift. He immediately had the answers to all our queries and broke everything down for us which made it very to understand and reassuring. Would highly recommend this company to anyone.

- Farhan Abubacar

I have used Crown energy over the past 8 years on multiple projects. I have found them to be very easy to work with, they are both professional & knowledgeable. The most recent application was for services for a new build block of 34 apartments. Michelle Kelly was the lady I have been dealing with on my most recent application, she was very helpful, enthusiastic, professional, she even took the time to go back to the contractors with my many questions & differing requirements.

- Steve Lewis, Hall Park Construction

Good old fashioned customer service. Lily, my first contact was polite, very communicative and knowledgeable about the service they offered she was a delight to talk to. Tegan, contract person was efficient and so far has kept me up to date with all I need to know. I would recommend the company to others on their customer service alone.
